Coronavirus: A strong restriction on crossing the border and travel on the Dutch side which also establishes… a curfew from 20 pm to 6 am!

During a joint press conference on Sunday afternoon, the Prefect and the Prime Minister gave details of these new measures.

Despite a regulation reducing travel to the strict minimum in the French part, "too frequent crossings of the border" were still noted until yesterday.

The prefect therefore proposed to the Prime Minister of Sint Maarten to limit traffic between the two parts of the island to only two reasons, which Silveria Jacobs accepted. Sylvie Feucher has taken a prefectoral decree which comes into force tomorrow and is valid until April 15.

From Monday onwards, people who live on one side and work on the other cannot cross the border. In the event of checks by the gendarmes, they must show two documents: proof of professional travel stamped and signed by the employer (already in progress) as well as a derogatory travel certificate which will be downloadable from the prefecture site.

Travel for "urgent medical reasons with supporting documents" (prescription, etc.) will also be authorized.

For residents of the Dutch side, the government will also provide a certificate, it will be online in the evening on its website.

As of tomorrow, it will no longer be possible to cross the border to go shopping or to visit friends or family on the other side. Or to go to the beach on the Dutch side.

Note that the measures concerning travel within the French part remain the same.

In addition, the Prime Minister of Sint Maarten announced that travel in the Dutch part will be limited from Monday onwards only as strictly as in the French part. The terms will be specified in the coming hours. Individuals must also complete and provide a certificate.

Silveria Jacobs made this decision almost two weeks after France applied it in Saint-Martin, given the increase in recent days in the number of cases (+ 3 cases in the space of a day) and contamination of a resident who had not traveled.

Finally, the Prime Minister introduced a curfew on the Dutch side from 20 p.m. to 6 a.m. starting on Monday, March 30. However, people who have to go to work can circulate.
