CULTURE - ASSOCIATION: The children of Sandy Ground try their hand at the theater

During the two weeks of Easter holidays, eight young people from Sandy Ground took a free theater course in order to experience the liberating power of this little-known means of expression in the territory of Saint-Martin.

Initially set up as an extracurricular program launched by the Cité Éducative, the project masterfully carried out by Audrey Duputié has been revisited through her desire to offer access to theater workshops for young people from priority neighborhoods so that they find on the boards the means to express themselves and to discover the pleasures of comedy. The organization and logistics, in partnership with the SOS children of the islands association and Cobraced, were flawless, from the transport of the young people from Sandy Ground to Orient Bay to the entertainment given by Virginie Contiès, the eight young girls revealed themselves on the stage of the Théâtre de la Chapelle, some of them braving their shyness. During these ten mornings of improvisation, acting and self-discovery, the budding actresses felt all the benefits of theatrical practice. By offering this type of workshop, which required a year of work, Audrey Duputié was particularly keen to make theater known, to facilitate access to culture and to raise awareness among Saint-Martin youth of the 6th art. As a reminder, the Théâtre de la Chapelle, an active player in community life, graciously offers 1.500 places every year to Saint-Martin neighborhood associations to attend performances. Each year, many schools are organized so that young Saint-Martinois discover the magic that lies behind the theatre. The eight talented young girls who took part in this first Easter holiday course have been added to the list of charmed people. The next session will take place the first week of July 2023. In the meantime, the Théâtre de la Chapelle team is working hard to set up free weekly workshops with the children of Quartier d'Orléans, Grand- Case and Sandy Ground from the start of the next school year. _VX
