EDUCATION: Towards a branch of the Antilles-Guyane University in Saint-Martin

0

On Thursday March 9, the Collectivity of Saint-Martin received the president of the University of the Antilles-Guyana (UAG), Michel Geoffroy, accompanied by the vice-president, Madame Cassin, and her assistant, Madame Armougon. Medhi Boucard, Director of Education, and Jessie Thenard, Training/Education Project Manager within the Collectivité, met the delegation to discuss the technical aspects of setting up a Saint-Martin branch.

The objective of this meeting was to settle the technical aspects related to the creation of a UAG branch in Saint-Martin. The day was divided into several points: the visit to the University of Sint Maarten with the UAG delegation with a view to setting up collaboration between the two universities and discussing the different modalities, the visit of potential land in Quartier d'Orléans for the establishment of the future university branch of Saint-Martin, and finally, a working meeting with the 3rd vice-president, Dominique Démocrite Louisy and the vice-rectorate represented by Olivier Beaufour, on arbitrations. The main challenge for the Collectivity of Saint-Martin is to increase the offer of post-baccalaureate training in order to offer young people from Saint-Martin the possibility of continuing their university course on their territory and to stem the many departures, sometimes without return, to other destinations. The UAG can for its part initiate an international opening and affirm a Caribbean anchorage through this project. So that the opening of this antenna meets the real needs of the territory, the Collectivity of Saint-Martin wished to have a preliminary study aimed at estimating the said needs, both from a qualitative and quantitative point of view. This study also addresses the prospects for territorial attractiveness and the possibilities of cooperation with neighboring countries, including Sint Maarten and Anguilla. It answers the two questions raised, namely “How to make Saint-Martin a university destination? » and « What are the possibilities for cooperation and partnership with the neighboring islands? ". Here is an ambitious file that is on track for an opening by 2024 according to the wishes of the president of the Collectivité Louis Mussington and his 3rd vice-president Dominique Démocrite Louisy. _VX
