Sandy Ground party: Youth at the heart of concerns

Wednesday, August 15, feast of the assumption, also celebrates the feast of Sandy Ground which took place again this year in the parking lot of the Albéric Richards stadium.

After an ecumenical religious ceremony which ended with the songs of the Marseillaise and the hymn of Saint-Martin, elected officials followed one another at the lectern.

The speeches were inaugurated by Cédric André, recently elected representative of the Sandy Ground district council who called for unity and reported on the projects discussed at the first meeting of his council: the creation of a sidewalk between schools and the bridge, as well as activities for young people and the elderly… "To help young people to evolve, we will work with associations and ensure that things are done properly".

Steven Patrick, 4th vice-president of the COM, recalled that the Community had produced guides for reconstruction, and summarized the timetable for the repair work of the schools in the neighborhood: Jérôme Beaupère and Aline Hanson who "should be ready for the start of the school year " And invited everyone to take action to clean up and rebuild the island: "Irma was bad, but this is the opportunity to build a better Saint-Martin".

Then MP Claire Guion-Firmin said she was touched by the pastor's message during the religious ceremony: "together we will be strong and think about what we really want for the territory". She then congratulated Cédric André on his election and praised the work of neighborhood associations: Sandy Ground on the Move, Madtwoz and SOS children of the North Islands. "Your engagement gives us hope," she said before regretting the removal of the parliamentary reserve which would have allowed her to help them financially but assured them of her "unwavering support". She then addressed the young people: "you are our wealth". And encouraged them to get involved "in any form whatsoever to build [their] civic identity, and therefore our common identity".

Finally, the prefect Sylvie Feucher also greeted the representative and the members of the neighborhood council. She recalled that she was counting on them to help the COM and the State to build projects that concern the district, but also to help its inhabitants and to raise their requests. “Sandy Ground is a working-class neighborhood, with a very diverse population, where there is a strong youth presence, where there are certainly difficulties but also a lot of positive energies. The youth unemployment rate is high. This situation can be explained by the history of neighborhood settlement, but it is inconceivable to stop at this observation. It is urgent to take action. The State can help, but the vision for the future and the development of the district depends first of all, because it is the meaning of decentralization, of the community. »She advanced before highlighting the role of the State with the funds of the city policy and paying tribute to associations. She considers that one of the possibilities for progress for young people starts with the school of the Republic and has announced that she wants to develop partnerships with the grandes écoles. “A digital school could see the light of day in Saint-Martin” she proposed. The Prefect is personally committed to developing access to culture in the neighborhood, in particular with the support of the Bibliothèques sans Frontières Foundation. She also invited young people to register with Pôle Emploi and to apply for existing training systems and assess what is lacking.

Once the official ceremony was over, the festivities continued until the end of the evening with musical entertainment and traditional games.
