Mathematics week in schools has started!

For this new edition of "Mathematics Week", the schools of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin are part of the national dynamic. The theme chosen for this year is “Mathematics and society”.

Remember that this week  aims to:

Show to all pupils in schools, colleges and high schools as well as to their parents, a current, lively and attractive image of mathematics;

Insist on the importance of mathematics in the training of citizens and in their daily life (numbers, forms, measures, digital sciences);

• Present the diversity of professions in which mathematics plays an important or essential role, as well as the wealth of links existing between mathematics and other disciplines (physics, chemistry, life sciences, environment, computer science, economic and social sciences, geography, etc.) .);

• Develop in the pupils the taste for effort, perseverance, the will to progress, respect for others, for oneself and for the rules: so many values ​​common to sport and mathematics;

Show that the practice of mathematics can be a source of aesthetic emotions (elegance of a theory, a formula, a reasoning) in order to reveal the link between mathematics, pleasure and creativity

Thus, various operations and events will be held from March 15 to 21, 2021 in schools:

  Mathematics in everyday life:

• A problem of everyday life to be solved every day for all cycles.

• Mathematics walk: identify the presence of mathematical objects in everyday life.

• Establishment of a local products market in Clair Saint-Maximin school in which cycle 2 students will be required to make purchases with the participation of cycle 3 students.

• Workshops and multidisciplinary exhibitions at Marie Amélie-Leydet elementary school.

• At the Mont des Accords college: presentations on life, work, applications in our everyday life as mathematicians.

• Puzzle competition at Mont des Accords college.

• Course: each day, the pupils, in teams, will encounter puzzles to be solved in different places of Gustavia elementary school.

  Mathematics and Sport:

• Mathematics Olympiad at Jérôme Beaupère nursery school : sports mathematical games workshops.

• “Courseton” within Clair Saint-Maximin elementary school : Visualize and understand the relationships between distances (cm, m).

• Sports activities related to mathematics: Mölki-Tik tak toes- Target games-Orientation course-  Challenges: to travel the greatest distance by a class. Run the fastest over a given distance - Coordinate running or archery.

  Mathematics and the Arts:

• Daily discovery of a work of art: spot and identify the different mathematical elements.

• Math and Art at theClair Saint-Maximin school : Realization of works in  3D and ephemeral chalk works (arabesque).
