World Diabetes Day is organized on November 14 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), supported by the World Health Organization (WHO). On this occasion, the National Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS) took stock of the severe complications of diabetes. Worrisome figures.
Among those treated for diabetes, the InVS indicates that 11.737 were hospitalized in 2013 for a myocardial infarction, 17.148 for a stroke and 7.749 for a lower limb amputation. These severe complications are much higher in the overseas departments and in certain metropolitan regions. In Saint-Martin, “according to the Constant study, 8% of individuals in our area are diabetic, being overweight is an associated factor since 11% of individuals in this situation are diabetic”, specifies the Saint-Martin association Health (SMS) which, throughout the month, will offer free screenings and hygieno-dietetic advice in relation to each person's pathology.
A walk and a health trail
As part of this world day, the association organizes this Friday a luminous night walk in Marigot, at 18 pm. Participants are requested to wear a blue or white top. On Saturday, the members of the association will meet you at Howell Center, from 30 a.m. to 9 p.m., for a presentation of the diabetic patient's health journey.
Many activities will be offered on site, including free screening and physical activity workshops. In 2013, more than 3 million people were treated by medication for diabetes in France, according to the InVS.
