For a week, checks were carried out in Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin as part of the COTAF (Territorial Anti-Fraud Operational Committee) to combat illegal work.
These actions aimed to restore the social and economic balance, often disrupted by undeclared work, which creates unfair competition and weakens undeclared workers by depriving them of fundamental rights, particularly in terms of health and safety. The inspections, carried out by the Gendarmerie and the Labor Inspectorate, targeted sectors such as catering, construction and car rental. Of the 29 establishments inspected, violations were noted: failure to declare employment, employment of foreign workers without authorization, non-compliance with the rules of posting and security breaches. These violations may result in criminal or administrative sanctions, such as the temporary closure of establishments for a maximum period of three months, by prefectural decision.
Prevention of serious and fatal accidents at work
As part of these operations, the Labor Inspectorate also relayed the national campaign launched on October 12, 2024 to prevent serious and fatal accidents. Every day in France, more than 100 workers are seriously injured, and two lose their lives. This campaign emphasizes the responsibilities of employers in terms of risk prevention: precise assessment, training, awareness-raising and concrete actions to secure construction sites, particularly in the construction industry. During the week, inspections revealed serious dangers, such as non-compliant scaffolding, leading to temporary stoppages of activity to ensure safety before resuming work.
