During the public session of October 16 in the Senate, Guillaume Arnell, senator from Saint-Martin, addressed the government.
Following the recent floods in the Aude which caused the death of thirteen people and reminded him of the images of "Hurricane Irma which hit the West Indies and particularly [his] territory Saint-Martin in September 2017 leaving behind destruction and desolation ”, he asked:“ how do you plan to strengthen the action of the State to ensure more effective prevention in the face of natural disasters that we know are more numerous in the future? ".
“We did not wait for this tragic event to start taking action. Last August I launched a prevention and awareness campaign alongside the French weather services in Tarn-et-Garonne, which precisely aimed to respond and encourage people to adopt good reflexes in the face of climate threats. "
replied Brune Poirson, Secretary of State to the Minister of State, Minister for the ecological and inclusive transition.
She also added that the State had invested in a supercomputer, at Météo France "which should make it possible to better prevent and better predict precisely these particularly powerful meteorological events".
Finally, the Minister recalled that since March 2017, the Ministry of Ecological and Inclusive Transition has implemented a system called Vigicrues Flash which makes it possible to give local elected officials real-time information which they can then give to local populations and share in real time the evolution of the meteorological event. "I invite all the communities that have not yet subscribed to this service to do so as soon as possible," she concluded.
