August 15 is a Christian holiday that celebrates the Assumption, the day of the Virgin Mary's ascent to heaven.
In France, it has been a public holiday since 1638, when King Louis XIII publishes the official edict which declares to take the Virgin as protectress and patroness of the Kingdom of France. And this, to thank her for allowing his wife Anne of Austria to finally get pregnant.
In Saint-Martin, August 15 also corresponds to the festival of Sandy Ground. On Wednesday August 15, the community is therefore organizing a day of celebrations in the parking lot of the Alberic Richards stadium. The official festivities will begin at 10 a.m. with a religious ceremony which will be followed at 11:15 a.m. by the officials' speeches and the reception.
Then from 12:30 p.m. entertainment will start with music groups, DJ's, dance shows and organization of traditional games. The day will end at 23 p.m.
