During hurricane season, the delegated prefect Vincent Berton organizes a weekly meeting with all the stakeholders concerned to take stock of the situation. The participants include the communities of SXM and SBH, the police, the firefighters, the Armed Forces in the Antilles, as well as certain government departments. The meeting begins with a briefing from Météo France, which announces a calm start to October 2024, while closely monitoring the tropical depressions in formation. This is followed by an inventory of the needs for the two islands and the progress of current files.
The Beautiful Creole
The owner responded to the formal notice by starting clean-up work. The Sandy Ground on the Move association was commissioned to remove materials likely to burn or fly away. Access to the private road of this hotel wasteland, considered by the prefect to be one of the most dangerous in SXM, will soon be blocked by a padlocked chain.
End-of-Life Pleasure Craft (BPHU)
Of the 24 vessels in violation, 7 have been stripped of their ownership. A second wave of formal notices for 2 vessels is underway, and a third will follow at the end of October. With two Guadeloupean companies having responded to the wreck destruction contract, Vincent Berton expressed the wish that it be awarded locally, aiming to obtain the ICPE (classified installations for the protection of the environment) for the company VERDE SXM so that it can process the waste.
