The individual had been sentenced by French justice to five years in prison, an arrest warrant had been issued against him.

CF, born in Sint-Maarten in 1991, was sentenced by the criminal court of Saint-Martin in April 2017 to five years in prison for committing three French car thefts, one with a gun, in 2014. He was identified thanks to his DNA left in one of the stolen vehicles.

He was absent at the hearing and an arrest warrant had been issued against him. He was located in the Dutch part a few months ago and the gendarmerie asked the Sint Maarten police to arrest him and hand him over. CF was therefore placed in pre-trial detention in Philipsburg pending his extradition.

The young man was handed over to the French authorities on Wednesday. He was brought before the deputy prosecutor who notified him of his arrest warrant. CF, however, opposed his judgment. He will therefore be retried on January 22 by the Basse-Terre court. He was again placed in pre-trial detention and transferred to prison in Guadeloupe.
