ENVIRONMENT: Sargassum continues to appear on the beaches of Saint-Martin

In its pelagic sargassum grounding monitoring and forecasting bulletin for the northern islands communicated this Monday, September 12, 2022, Météo France maintains the risk of seaweed grounding for St Martin and St Barthélemy at medium.

On the satellite images captured between September 9 and September 11, 2022, more or less scattered rafts were visible in the east of Saint-Martin and especially in the north of Saint-Barthélemy. They have been the source of occasional groundings on the east of Saint-Martin since this report.

Sargassum remains numerous in the Atlantic basin and the trend for the next two weeks confirms that the sargassum season is far from over. Indeed, the area between Barbados and Saint-Vincent and the south-east of these islands remains very busy as well as the area to the east of the Lesser Antilles. New strandings, sometimes notable, are expected on the islands, on Martinique as well as Guadeloupe or the Northern Islands. On the Saint-Barthélemy side, several filaments are rising in a south-easterly flow. Groundings in waves will therefore occur during the next few days on the south and east of Saint-Barth. _VX
