SINT MAARTEN: It is everyone's duty to report any form of child abuse to the police

0

In recent weeks, several cases of alleged abuse of minors have been covered by the media. Via press release, the police of Sint Maarten (KPSM) claims to be aware of them and addresses the Saint-Martin population directly.

Because these alleged cases have been covered in various media, the police are keen to assure the public that the KPSM Youth and Morals Department is aware of these cases. A particular case is that of several individuals circulating a video showing the abuse of a minor. The police are in possession of a copy of this video which is now evidence in the further investigation of this matter. People streaming this video and any videos of a similar nature should be aware that possession of child pornography on their cell phones is a criminal offence. This includes the transmission of these types of videos. The police are urging the population to stop distributing this video or similar videos. Minors and their families are the direct victims of these situations, the police officers in charge of these cases treat these cases with great sensitivity and discretion. Police are therefore urging the public to do the same. At the same time, community workers and the police actively participate in education programs to reduce the potential risk of child abuse and neglect and to encourage reporting of these crimes. _VX
