SINT-MAARTEN: MINISTERS REDUCE SALARIES BY 20%

0

The Council of Ministers decided, at a meeting this week, to cut their own salaries by 20%.

Before the financial impact of COVID-19, Parliamentarians and Ministers had already agreed to a 10% reduction in their wages in February.

Subsequently during the budget debate, MP Ludmila Duncan had her motion approved for an additional 5% reduction. Finally, during Wednesday's meeting, the Council of Ministers approved an additional 5%, bringing the ministers' salary cuts to a total of 20%.

It was also agreed that Parliamentarians and Ministers would suffer general budget cuts. The Government is currently making a multitude of cuts in all budgets to offset the increases in spending induced by the COVID-19 crisis. The Government of Sint Maarten confirms that taking care of the most vulnerable remains an absolute priority. Much of the current spending is spent on recovery aid, food security and health.
